Cats are not small dogs, and when it comes to essential oils that difference really matters. As an animal aromatherapist, oil safety around cats is the area I’m most careful about, and the one where shortcuts are never worth it.
Why cats are different
Cats process compounds differently from dogs and people. Their livers lack some of the pathways that break certain oil constituents down, which means what’s gentle for a dog can build up in a cat. That’s why I never simply scale a dog blend down for a cat; the whole approach has to change.
The rules I follow
- Always dilute heavily, and always give a cat the choice to walk away
- Never apply oils directly to a cat without professional guidance
- Keep diffusing brief, in a ventilated room the cat can leave freely
- Watch behaviour closely, drooling, hiding or pawing at the face means stop
The shortcuts never worth taking
Leaving a diffuser running all day, using an oil meant for another species, or applying anything neat, these are the habits I’d gently ask every cat owner to drop. When in doubt, less is safer, and a quick chat beforehand can save a lot of worry. Natural care should always sit alongside your vet’s advice.
